WHAT
TMCF and its partners presented the first Los Angeles Awards of Excellence event, recognizing the outstanding achievements of individuals who continue to work hard in assuring young people have access to quality education.
The event was the last of six regional events that took place in 2011 and is part of TMCF’s regional Awards of Excellence program, which honors deserving individuals across the country. Honorees are chosen based on their proven leadership, community involvement, professional and civic excellence, as well as their contributions to education and diversity.
WHY
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Awards of Excellence (AOE) were created in 2000 to recognize those distinguished individuals, in a specific geographic location, who serve as role models through their significant achievement in a chosen field, through community service, or by exemplifying Justice Thurgood Marshall’s commitment to equality, civil rights and education. The events are annual reminders of Thurgood Marshall’s legacy. By celebrating like-minded leaders, the events not only serve as annual reminders of Justice Thurgood Marshall’s legacy, but forge partnerships between AOE honorees and sponsors to support the students at the 47 member, public, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
