SHANYCE STEWART EARNS PRESTIGOUS THURGOOD MARSHALL COLLEGE FUND INTERNSHIP

WARNER ROBBINS, Ga. -- University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball player Shanyce Stewart has earned a summer internship with the United States Air Force as part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) will work with the U.S. Air Force from June 3rd through August 10th in Winter Robbins, Georgia. There she will attend lectures on professional development from organizations including the Air Force, the Coast Guard and Wells Fargo. She will also get a project and learn skills needed to accomplish the goal of completing the task.

"I am very proud to receive the internship," says Stewart. "I am looking to gain experience and be around people in a place I've never been.

Stewart applied for the internship in October and participated in two mock interviews, then had a 25-minute interview with a representative of the college fund. Candidates needed to have at least a 3.2 GPA, and three were selected for the Air Force internship. She received the internship at the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Conference.

"We are proud of Shanyce and the work she has put in with the challenges of her major," says UMES women's basketball head coach Fred Batchelor. "She is a shining star of the program and is an example of high character, academic excellence, work ethic, kindness and service."

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund serves 47 public institutions, funding undergraduate and graduates, led by CEO Johnny C. Taylor.

"I'm open to anything, and there is nothing specific that I am looking to learn," says Stewart. "I want to take away as much as I can from this experience."
