Ryan ChappellRyan Chappell is a recent Marketing and Global studies graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. When Ryan set his goal to land a full-time position at a reputable company, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute seemed like the perfect opportunity. At the Leadership Institute, Ryan got an opportunity to polish his professional networking skills. Being around so many accomplished professionals inspired him to constantly pursue education and set higher goals. As part of Shell Oil Products U.S.A.’s leadership development program, Ryan is currently an Associate Product Manager for Shell Oil Products US, in Houston, TX. In this role, he is responsible for assessing and negotiating contracts for unbranded fuels for a multi-million gallon business. In addition, he has invested extra time to participate in a mini rotation with Shell Canada to hone his skills of investment planning in the retail space.
One of Ryan’s most rewarding experiences was his position as program support coordinator where he implemented a nationwide marketing loyalty program. Ryan was responsible for managing the execution of the Grocery Rewards Program with Kroger. This experience provided Ryan a solid foundation that served to establish his career at Shell. As this program was one of the most complicated and tedious launches, Ryan seized the opportunity to deliver results through others working with stakeholders, vendors, and customers alike. As a result, Ryan positioned himself competitively among his more experienced peers.
Ryan has a great sense of determination and takes pride in delivering on promises and learning about a business from the ground up. In his endeavors outside work, Ryan channels that energy in participating in mentoring organizations with Leaders of Tomorrow in association with the National Black MBA Association.
Ryan’s thrust and hunger to achieve and set higher goals has always been a part of his success module. His progression with Shell is largely based on a dream to be a part of a global team, a passion that has lived in him since he studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark as and undergraduate student. Working diligently to meet that goal, Ryan was able to secure an assignment to contribute to an investment planning project for the retail network in Canada and in so doing, increased his marketability by learning a valuable part of the business.
Another goal that he is determined to meet is to achieve his Master’s of Business at a top-tier institution. In 10 years, he sees himself being self sufficient in entrepreneurial ventures in marketing and business consulting.
“One of the best pieces of information I have for TMCF students is to always understand the end game.” Ryan grew up knowing he had to get an education in order to be successful, but says he did not grasp the importance of defining that quest until later. “Be successful at what, doing what, and in what industry? These are questions I encourage students to ask themselves to be successful in endeavors that are important to them.”
