Ryan Chappell

E_RyanCRyan Chappell is a recent Marketing and Global studies graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. When Ryan set his goal to land a full-time position at a reputable company, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute seemed like the perfect opportunity. At the Leadership Institute, Ryan got an opportunity to polish his professional networking skills. Being around so many accomplished professionals inspired him to constantly pursue education and set higher goals. As part of Shell Oil Products U.S.A.’s leadership development program, Ryan is currently an Associate Product Manager for Shell Oil Products US, in Houston, TX. In this role, he is responsible for assessing and negotiating contracts for unbranded fuels for a multi-million gallon business. In addition, he has invested extra time to participate in a mini rotation with Shell Canada to hone his skills of investment planning in the retail space.

Lillian Hemphill

lillian_hempmillIImagine being Teacher of the Year not once, but twice! Lillian Hemphill of Pine Bluff, AK, doesn’t have to imagine it. She actually won the title Teacher of the Year twice, receiving her most recent recognition on Monday, May 23, 2011. Her first award was when she taught at Covenant Keepers College Prep in Little Rock, AR, and her most recent acknowledgement is for her efforts at Watson Chapel Jr. High in Pine Bluff.  Hemphill attributed her success in the classroom to the TMCF Teacher Quality and Retention Program.

Keith James

B_NEW_KeithJKeith James is a proud alumnus of Tuskegee University.  After earning a Bachelors of Science degree in business administration with a focus in marketing, Keith is now a territory sales manager for the number one tobacco company in the world, Altria/Phillip Morris.  There, he accounts for $15 million of annual sales and manages about 150 retail accounts. He attributes a part of his success to the opportunities presented to him during his Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) 10th Annual Leadership Institute experience.  Keith never walks by an open door, so when the opportunity to attend the leadership institute came along, he quickly jumped right in. He knew that being in the atmosphere with the top students in the country was a way that he could network as well as perfect his leadership and communication skills.  More importantly, he understood that in the corporate world, leadership and communication skills were the two key attributes he would need to succeed.

Kanetra Washington

A_NEW_KanetraKanetra Washington is a proud alumna of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism and mass communications with a concentration in public relations, Kanetra took a detour in her pursuits to work in her field when she attended the Thurgood Marshall Annual Leadership Institute Recruitment Conference and Career Fair.

“Merging academics with developmental and networking skills over the course of one weekend, the structure of this conference forced me to immerse in activities needed to make the necessary transition from academics to the workforce,” she states.  By interacting in various social settings, Kanetra narrowed her decision to one company: AT&T.
