The Walmart Foundation and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) First-Generation Scholars Program provides need-based merit scholarships in the amount of $4,400 to first-generation students attending any of the public HBCUs and Predominately Black Institutes (PBIs) in the TMCF network.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good standing at their respective college or university.  The applicant’s extra-curricular activities will also be considered as part of the selection process.

The scholarship will be applied in the fall and spring semesters of the 2011-2012 academic school year at $2,200 per semester. 

Scholarship recipients must:
  • Attend one of the 47 TMCF-member schools. For a list click here
  • Be a first-generation college student
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the duration of the scholarship
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped  I-551
  • Must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and service experience
  • Be recommended by a TMCF-member school Scholarship Coordinator
To complete your application, please submit the following supporting documents.

NOTE: INCOMPLETE FILES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
  • Resume (should demonstrate community service and any employment/internship experiences)
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member at your TMCF school.  (Applicants are required to provide a scanned copy of the letter in pdf format so it can be uploaded)
  • Submission of a copy of the Student Aid Report (received from filing FAFSA)
  • College Transcript (Applicants may upload a copy of unofficial or official)
  • Essay
    • In a minimum of 500 words, please address ONE of the following questions:
      1. What do you consider to be the most important societal problem today? Why?
      2. Explain the importance of your major in today’s society?
      3. What does it mean to be the first person in your family to receive a college degree?
