In June, U.S. celebrities and members of the TMCF staff traveled to South Africa to participate in one of TMCF’s newest international programs, iLEAD – South Africa. iLEAD – South Africa is an international Tour created by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in collaboration with Valiant Innovative Creations, to empower young people through a series of panel discussions surrounding five core attributes required for success:

Inspiration | Leadership | Education | Aspiration | Determination

The U.S. delegation teamed up with South African celebrities and visited Johannesburg, Soweto, and Madidi for an intense empowerment program. At no cost to attendees, over 1,000 student (grades 7-12 and college students), teachers, parents, and the community participated in forums, panel discussions, and celebrity meet and greets during the Tour. Throughout the week, the delegation met with students and took advantage of the opportunity to sow seeds in the young minds. The team of diverse, multi-talented professionals provided first-hand testimonies to young people that will inspire and motivate them to be the next generation of global leaders. iLEAD – South Africa will be an annual program that will be held during the commemoration of Youth Month in South Africa.

Program Objectives:

  • To enable a team of diverse, multi-talented professionals to provide first-hand testimonies to young people that will inspire and motivate them to be the next generation of global leaders.
  • To provide a forum that will foster candid discussion on career refinement, your personal brand, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
  • To collaborate with partners in other countries that will open doors for exchange between TMCF member-schools and students from all over the world, engaging them in the opportunities offered by the nations public HBCUs.

Press.Small Press Conference – TMCF’s President and CEO, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. and Valiant Innovative Creations Chairman, Peach Mthethwa kicked-off the tour with a press conference held in a sky-room, airlifting attendees hundreds of feet into the sky with panoramic views of the city. Many shared why iLEAD was important to them and what influenced their decision to be a part of the inaugural event.
Launch.Small Launch Event - The Tour had its official launch at "The Venue". The crowd was amazed with an reenactment and performance by some local youth, centered around the Soweto Uprising on June 16, 1976 where many high school students were killed while protesting in the streets of Soweto. June 16 (Youth Day) is now a national holiday in South Africa. This is the main reason iLEAD is taking place during the month of June during Youth Month. The American and South African Ambassadors/Panelists were officially introduced to the South African community during this launch event.
Panel.Small Panel Discussions/Meet & Greet – This day of the tour was very emotional and impactful. The Ambassadors did panel discussions with the students and community. The South African students were so humble and very eager in learning about career preparedness, women empowerment, entrepreneurship and being a leader. After the panel discussions, students were able to do a meet and greet with the Ambassadors. The students and parents in attendance really appreciated TMCF for bringing iLEAD to South Africa and giving them a new sense of inspiration in relationship to their future.
Remembrance-Event.Small Day of Remembrance Concert – The Ambassadors traveled to Seamoge Middle School in the province of Madidi in Pretoria for a June 16th day of remembrance. Students were greeted by members of the education community, entertained by local deejays and provided words of encouragement from the Tour Ambassadors. Over 500 members of the community and students were in attendance for this great event.
